A trug is a type of basket from Sussex made from slats of wood. Today it is often used as a gardening accessory, but in the past it has been used for building work and many other demanding manual labour tasks.
In 2012 I went on a two day trug making course and learnt how to make these beautiful traditional baskets by hand, along with Gareth Neal, William Warren, Simon Maidment and Chris Eckersley.
The Flat-pack Trug has been design to fit into an envelope and posted to a customer, who builds it themselves. The supply chain of many modern products necessitates that the object be sold in parts and built by the customer.
A traditional trug cannot be collapsed. I thought it would interesting to create modern trug that fulfilled a modern day requirement for sale and distribution via the internet.
I also wanted to encourage people to engage with the product and take a glimpse into the life of a craftsman by spending a small amount of time making it themselves.
